Now available: ‘I am the only woman there by Bertien van Manen 📘🖤
Bertien van Manen (1935-2024) photographed in the 1970’s female labor migrants, and the wives of labor migrants, who came to the Netherlands in the context of family reunification. She portrayed Turkish, Moroccan, Tunisian, Spanish, Yugoslavian, Portugese, Greek and Italian women. At home, work, parties and leisure activities, often struggling to survive in a foreign culture. These photographs resulted in her first book ‘Vrouwen te Gast’, published in 1979. In 2024 Bertien revisited her own photographs and texts to make a new, more contemporary, edit of her first work. For ‘I am the only woman there’ she updated the book with new discovered photographs from her archive and new texts, by herself and Kim Knoppers.

‘On the ground among the animals’ (2015-2024) is a research project that takes the Natura 2000 network as a reference for researching the place that human beings occupy within nature. This network is a series of ecological corridors promoted by the European Union, created to preserve fauna, flora and biodiversity. It is a transnational communication system that goes beyond the border policies of each state, and puts ecological logic first. Bridges are some of the most important infrastructures in the network, since they make it easier for animals to overcome architectural barriers such as motorways and roads. At the same time, multiple fences and security cameras monitor and follow their movements, casting doubt on their apparent freedom of movement. The series includes landscape views of natural spaces and photographs of viaducts and other constructions, as well as snapshots of animals captured by surveillance cameras installed by researchers.

The book is a revised and English edition of Bertien’s first book ‘Vrouwen te Gast’ (1979). “I was fed up with the hectic life of working for magazines, and I wanted more time to produce less superficial photographs. When I read the preface to the book ‘A Seventh Man: Migrant Workers in Europe’ (1975) by John Berger and Jean Mohr, I knew what I had to do. Berger points out that they had only documented the experiences of male migrant workers. He thought another book should be made for the women. That’s my subject matter, I thought.
No one had devoted any attention to the first generation of women migrant workers in Europe, from Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Yugoslavia and Greece. I decided to focus on the Netherlands. No one had looked into their position on the job market or dependence on their husbands. In fact, no one even knew of their existence because you barely saw them. They stayed in their rooms and were not allowed to do much. I shined some light on them with that book and that is something I am really proud of. I photographed them in their homes, at work and during celebrations. All in black and white. And I took photos at a demonstration by Turkish women migrant workers at a poultry plant in Almelo. Most of the women in the portraits I took were originally from the countryside, had followed their husbands here and suddenly sat holed up in a small back apartment three floors up. I photographed some single women, too, who had come to the Netherlands on their own to find work.” — Bertien van Manen in an interview with Kim Knoppers, May 2024. The full interview is part of the book, alongside some texts of Bertien which she wrote in the 1970’s.

Simone Engelen: “A defining moment for me was when I was sexually abused by two individuals during my high school year in the U.S. This devastating event not only influenced how I interact with others but also reshaped my perception of intimacy. In ‘27 Drafts’, I visually articulate this inner battle of dealing with my body, identity and feminity. My inward journey began with shame, and led me to develop coping mechanisms involving addiction, anger and control issues. In 2022 I decided to go back to the U.S. with my mom to find closure. It evolved into an exploration of a past life, in which I used my camera as a filter to create necessary distance and engage in conversations we had long avoided. The title refers to the 27 attempts I have made to put into words the impact of this assault; simply seeking ways to share this single event – that shaped the most formative years of my life.”

About the book:
The Sicilian mafia is probably the most famous criminal organization in the world. Yet the origins of the mafia have been regarded as something of a mystery. Recently, an analysis of two historic datasets on agriculture, social structure and crime has revealed that a major catalyst for the rise of the mafia in Sicily was, somewhat surprisingly, the surge in demand for lemons that began in the first half of the 19th century. The book ‘Fear Guards the Lemon Grove’ by Klaus Pichler is an attempt to reconstruct the rise of the early Cosa Nostra and its connection with the lemon trade. His photographs of sites connected to the early Mafia are contrasted with historic images, documents and quotes, arranged like a passage through the different stages of the rise of organized crime in Sicily.

Michael Ashkin — There will be two of you

‘There will be two of you’ reorganizes and adds to the original 133 panoramic images of the New Jersey Meadowlands commissioned by Okwui Enwezor for Documenta 11 in 2002. The black and white photographs were installed at Documenta as a wall grid, but are here restored to the sequence in which they were taken during a year of meandering walks. The NJ Meadowlands have long been at the core of Ashkin’s visual imagination. In the accompanying text, ‘There will be two of you’, an enigmatic incident at the landscape’s symbolic center promises a redemptive allegory it cannot deliver.

Gerco de Ruijter — Footprint

Together with writer and filmmaker Peter Delpeut, Gerco de Ruijter investigates a phenomenon which they encountered on Google Earth, looking at airports. In the winter, planes are stripped of ice. On the concrete the stencil of an aeroplane remains, just long enough for the satellite to photograph it. De Ruijter and Delpeut wondered whether these giant drawings of aeroplanes really belong on a map. Or is Google Earth not a map, but a unique image of the world? It led to a quest for the mysterious aspects of ‘maps’ and Google Earth in particular, with Oklahoma City airport as the centre of attention.

RePose is a collection of close to 60 self-portraits made by the artist Tarrah Krajnak over the course of long-duration, studio-based live performances that incorporate an onsite darkroom, lighting studio, and an installation of xeroxed images of hundreds of examples of ‘women’s poses’. Krajnak sources these ‘women’s poses’ from her own personal collection and from site specific archival research, they come from fashion, vintage pornographic magazines, artist monographs, art history books, museum catalogs, and anthropological studies that span centuries and continents. @tarrahkrajnak_studio

Ed Panar — Winter Nights, Walking

In the winter months, our planet slowly drifts towards the furthest reaches of its orbital path around the Sun who exerts just enough gravitational force to coax Earth back around one more time, lest we’re launched outward into the Solar System, starless and adrift. A steady shower of millions of individually designed crystal sculpted snowflakes create a soft temporary encasement enclosing trees, poles, wires, streets, hills and houses inside pillowed layers below. During some of those nights there is a heightened sense of stillness and quiet all around, as if the world itself was placed on mute. The title ‘Winter Nights, Walking’ is a reference to a celebrated photography project by the American artist Robert Adams entitled ‘Summer Nights, Walking’, which was made in the the city of Denver in the American West. While the project could be seen as a nod to Adams, Panar’s intention for ‘Winter Nights, Walking’ is to make a Pittsburgh-specific project that highlights the unique qualities of the recent winter seasons in this region, with an eye towards the changing climate and the recent dark winters of the Covid-19 pandemic. Through the motif of wandering the city alone at night, Panar invites viewers to walk with me and consider the familiar space of the city in its uncanny delight. @edpanar
