The book "Soft Copy-Hard Copy (Amsterdam)" is the fourth book by Stephan Keppel that I am delighted to add to my collection.
I find his seemingly somewhat hermetic books interesting because they only reveal their secrets after much viewing and interpretation.
In 2018 Stephan Keppel started collecting works and stories of Amsterdam; the city where he lives, and works. The city is constantly changing, and so are the visible, invisible, social, and historic structures. In ‘Soft Copy Hard Copy’ Stephan Keppel explores and organizes these structures, creating an organic index of the city. This book is part of Keppel's ongoing research on the public space, urban structures and reproduction, and is combining his own photographs with re-photographed archival material, texts, and other (online and offline) found footage.

Published by Fw:Books, Amsterdam, a collaboration between Hans Gremmen (designer, editor), Petra Stavast (artist), and Karin Krijgsman (writer, curator).

Stephan will be working at ENTER ENTER the next weeks, where he will create various installations, based on pages of his book. 📚 As soon as the COVID regulations allow it, we will open the exhibition for the public. In the meantime we will post here regularly some of the page-installations made at ENTER ENTER by Stephan. ✨✨
SPECIAL EDITION: As part of the exhibition Stephan used one copy of SOFT COPY HARD COPY create an edition. Each page of the original book is overprinted with another page from the book. This way 112 unique prints are made and will be added as an extra page to 112 books. 🖨 The edition is only available during the exhibition (8 Jan. – 7 Feb. 2021). 2020년 12월 9일 (수) 이라선 오늘의 책은 다프나 탈모어 (Dafna Talmor)의 <Constructed Landscapes>입니다. <Constructed Landscapes>는 영국 사진가 다프나 탈모어의 신간이자 첫 사진집으로, 탈모어의 구성풍경(constructed landscapes) 작업을 담아 출간되었습니다.
⠀
있는 그대로의 풍경을 담는 것이 아니라 풍경의 요소를 재조합해 한 장의 사진을 만드는 것은 구스타브 르 그레이(Gustave Le Gray)나 오스카 레일랜더(Oscar Gustave Rejlander)의 사례와 같이 사진의 초창기 역사에 등장합니다. 이들의 사진이 요소를 조합하였음이 드러나지 않으면서도 이상적인 풍경을 만들고자 한 것이었다면, 다프나 탈모어는 풍경 사진이 조합된 것임을 결과물에 전면적으로 드러낸다는 점에서 큰 차이가 있습니다.

다프나 탈모어는 외부에서 찍은 풍경 사진의 작은 네거티브 필름을 더 작은 부분들로 오려 낸 후 콜라주 작업을 통해 재조합시키는 방식으로 이미지를 만듭니다. 우선 풍경 사진을 찍은 후, 그 안에 담긴 다양한 요소들 가운데 도로, 건물, 다리 등 명백히 인간이 만들었고 풍경의 순수성에 개입하는 대상을 오려내 제거합니다.

“인간이 만든 것으로 인식되는 도로나 길 등 어느 것이라도 보게 되는 순간, 관객은 내러티브를 만들기 시작한다고 생각했다. 어느 정도는 이런 측면에 저항하고 싶었다. 이 작업은 장소(place)이기보다 공간(space)이 되기를 바랬다. 인간이 만든 요소를 제거하면, 보는 이는 길을 잃고 공간 속에 심리적으로 머물게 된다. 나는 늘 이같이 특정성에 저항하는 것에 관심을 두었다. 이는 상당히 유토피아적인 것이기도 하다. 인식할 수 있는 역사, 시간, 장소가 있을 때보다 공간이 더욱 보편적인 것이 된다.”

다프나 탈모어는 ‘보편적 공간’을 표현하는 것이 유토피아적인 열망이라고 여깁니다. 사진은 일차적으로 특정 장소에 대한 기록이기 때문에, 사진에서 특수성을 완전히 제거한다는 것은 불가능하기 때문입니다. 다프나 탈모어의 작업은 바로 이 지점, 즉 현실과 유토피아, 실재와 가상이 융합

This outstanding archive based work displays images by amateur photographers Webb Nichols collected in the early 20th century of settlers in Wyoming, US. Aside from the strength of the selected images, the book also provides an insightful look into lives and communities of the American Western Frontier of that era. The book is available on our website.

@hans.gremmen : “Over a year ago Melanie McWorther contacted me, asking if she could introduce a project to me. When I saw the material of “Encampment, Wyoming” for the first time, I was directly amazed by the work of Lora Webb Nichols, and strong edit by Nicole Jean Hill, who selected out of 24,000 glass plates 100+ images. My main goal designing this book was the ambition to hold on to that first pure impression of the work. To achieve this I made a relatively straight forward, design, and talked with various binders and printers to find the right match. Choosing a printer is for me not a practical choice, but more a conceptual one. For this book I wanted perfect printing and binding, which I got from printer Henk Tienkamp and binder Herman van Waarden. The essay is printed with silver ink on black paper —— as a reference to both the mining industry of Encampment, as well as the process of photography itself.”
