Foam welcomes you to the presentation of Verena Blok’s newest book Love Shit on Friday 16 January at 6pm

For two-and-a-half years, Blok photographed pregnant people in various European countries at different stages of pregnancy. The images in the publication are combined with stories, anecdotes, and observations she wrote while working at a Dutch abortion clinic, alongside her own reflections around the complexities of motherhood and intimacy.
Host of the evening is curator Jilke Golbach, who is working together with Verena Blok on her solo exhibition at Foam in March 2026. Writer, artist and curator Mirthe Berentsen will moderate the talk with Verena Blok.

Doors wil open at 18.00 hrs and the talk starts around 18.30 hrs.

“When I was a child, my father would take me to the Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam and we’d sketch the elephants together. Observing, looking at animals with attention, was instilled in me from then on. Near the end of his life, when my dad was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, we visited the elephants in Rotterdam one last time. In his pencil drawings from this outing, the elephants appear as abstractions, conveying something direct and genuine, often found in children’s art. This book is an attempt to give weight and presence to these animals, a contemplation of our often complex relationships with animals and the importance of being able to empathise with other sentient beings.” — CD

Farren: “’Mixedness is my Mythology’ is a research-based project that brings together different themes within a search for identity and a sense of belonging within the African diaspora. My family is South African and Dutch, and the history of our two homes is built on colonialism, slavery and apartheid. This body of work is built on love, versatility and resilience.
On our family farm in the small town of Putten, in the Netherlands, ‘Mixedness is my Mythology’ was born out of portraying my brothers during the pandemic lockdowns using the agricultural barns, orchards and land as backdrops. Deep within myself, the question lingered: We wear Dutch clogs and overalls, yet we have African curls, so where do we belong? The answer came through creating this body of work: we belong to ourselves.”

A central figure in Boske’s work in Kamiyama is the Akui Gawa (river), which flows like a lifeline through the valley, connecting the surrounding communities. Historically, the river would often overflow, enriching the soil and making it ideal for cultivating Japanese indigo (Persicaria Tinctoria). This plant, essential to local craftsmanship for centuries, forms a near-symbiotic connection with its environment in my work. For the residents, the river reflects the ecological and economic health of the area: the water level and the vitality of flora and fauna are seen as indicators of the balance between humans and nature. This deep, layered relationship between landscape and life forms the foundation of the project.

‘Love Shit’ is about self-determination. Through both documentary photography and text, artist Verena Blok constructs a series of intimate portraits of pregnant individuals. Photographed over a period of two years, these portraits are combined with stories gathered during her work at an abortion clinic in the Netherlands. The book explores the dilemmas surrounding procreation – (un)wanted pregnancy, motherhood, childhood – and ultimately strives to reveal the complexities of womanhood through an honest and unfiltered lens.

Heap-O-Livin’ features a selection of images by Wyoming photographer and diarist Lora Webb Nichols. Nichols created and collected approximately 24,000 negatives and 65 years of diaries throughout her lifetime in the town of Encampment.
In addition to the industrial and economic aspects of this sparsely populated ranching and copper mining town, Lora’s images and diaries documented the lives of the girls and women within private households.
Despite the inherent isolation created by geography, the long brutal winters, and the patriarchal ideology that undervalued the role of women in Encampment in the late 19th and early 20th century, a robust female-led community emerged that provided a network of spiritual and emotional support. This was cultivated through the habitual visitations of immediate and extended family and friends into each other’s homes during their transition from children to wives and mothers. In Nichols’ sphere, these visitations often involved the act of picture-making.
Lora photographed their duties as mothers and homemakers but also made photographs that reveal the pleasure they experienced in simply being in each other’s company.

Medical eponyms are denominations of syndromes, diseases and discoveries that carry the name of the scientist who first isolated and described them.
