About the book:
‘The Centurion’ is named after the moniker of the famed American Express Black Card, which was created in response to persistent rumors of its existence throughout the 1980s. This contemporary tale of the rendering of reality from urban myth is perhaps emblematic of a new Gilded Age – where illusion manifests itself as power through wealth. Brian Ulrich’s photographs examine the construction of desire and myth, and portray wealth as an aspiration, an enchantment, and a means to consolidate power. From store display windows where luxury objects function as precursors to screen culture, to hierarchical views of landscape and architecture, to direct, performative portraiture, ‘The Centurion ‘questions the social, economic, and psychological effects of a system that equates success with plutonomy.
Photography has a particular power to reveal what many are blind to, especially within the culture of privilege. ‘The Centurion’ shows how commerce and consumption fuel irrational desire, envy, and the pursuit of power, while also revealing the often frail mechanics of its construction, evident in the inherent loss of value of an expired credit card or the folly of a contemporary home built as architecture of defense.

About the book:
Photographer Boris Snauwaert’s images are poetic and evocative. His work is made in natural landscapes, urban environments, and terrains vagues—the overlooked, transitional spaces at the edges of the city—yet they ultimately resist fixed definition. Sliver examines the meaning that emerges in the space between images. Rather than focusing on the individual photograph, the project foregrounds the shifts in meaning produced through the confrontation and tension between images placed in relation to one another. Each image informs and alters the reading of the next, generating a dynamic interplay of weight, scale, and texture. Within these relational structures, perceptual hierarchies begin to shift: the small can acquire a monumental presence, while the monumental can lose its inherent sense of weight and significance.

The publication Sliver is available with four different cover colours, each establishing a distinct visual and emotional tone.

The title ‘The Centurion’ refers to a modern myth turned reality that began in the 1980s. According to urban legend, American Express issued, by invitation only, a special charge card to ultra-wealthy individuals, who could use it to purchase anything and everything they wanted–from personal planes to private islands–as long as they did not disclose the existence of the card. The company fielded hundreds of calls from people requesting the card, and finally, in 1999, it launched the Centurion, an actual credit card program with features and benefits resembling those attributed to the imaginary card. This transformation of rumor into fact presaged the accelerating pace of income inequality, in which the dream of extreme wealth has increasingly become a reality for a small sliver of contemporary society.
Ulrich’s photographs document three key manifestations of this phenomenon: the display window, where luxury goods are presented as exclusive objects of desire; personal appearance, in which individuals cultivate eccentricity, highlight cultural mannerisms, and flaunt elite fashion in order to set themselves apart; and new residences designed to look like castles, with curtain walls serving as visual and conceptual fortifications against outsiders.

About the book:
‘Mixedness is my Mythology’ explores the historical relationship between South Africa and the Netherlands that revolves around the connections and contradictions of migration, ethnicity, colonialism and apartheid. Farren was born in South Africa in 1993, the official last year of the apartheid era that classified her as Coloured. Farren’s grandparents were forcefully removed and her parents chose to raise Farren in The Netherlands from the age of six. Being born in South Africa and growing up in the Netherlands has created a point of intersectionality in which she bring South African, Dutch, African American and Black American cultural aspects together in images.

While making these books, a miscellaneous pile kept growing in his studio: notes, sketches, photos, printed matter, screenshots, ephemera, and other breadcrumbs. ‘In Between’ is an attempt to deconstruct and re-organise this pile. The publication is a scrapbook about a hybrid design practice, but also a plea to consider failure as an option. “When I was a child, my father would take me to the Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam and we’d sketch the elephants together. Observing, looking at animals with attention, was instilled in me from then on. Near the end of his life, when my dad was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, we visited the elephants in Rotterdam one last time. In his pencil drawings from this outing, the elephants appear as abstractions, conveying something direct and genuine, often found in children’s art. This book is an attempt to give weight and presence to these animals, a contemplation of our often complex relationships with animals and the importance of being able to empathise with other sentient beings.” — CD

This edition of ‘Trigger’ presents a collection of photographs, images, and personal essays that reimagine what sociopolitical gatherings are, could be, or might become. Moving across the Southwest Asia and North Africa region (SWANA), it considers the politics of gathering and traces the many shapes and forms of coming together – from protest to ritual, from informal circles to fleeting encounters – to reflect on what remains, and what comes after. Guest-edited by Taous Dahmani in collaboration with FOMU Assemblies, the book features artists and writers such as abih Mroué, Ala Younis, Hoda Afshar, Myriam Boulos, Céline Semaan, Farah Abdessamad, Didem Pekün, Larissa Sansour, Jumana Manna, Khaled Barakeh, alongside an extensive archival section with works by Mashid Mohadjerin, Joyce Joumaa, Tashattot, Mahasen Nasser-Eldin, Arab Image Foundation, and more.

We are working with Farren van Wyk on her first book ‘Mixedness is my Mythology’. She created a campaign to support the book, check out the link in bio to pre-order the book, and/or prints! 💫💫

Farren: “’Mixedness is my Mythology’ is a research-based project that brings together different themes within a search for identity and a sense of belonging within the African diaspora. My family is South African and Dutch, and the history of our two homes is built on colonialism, slavery and apartheid. This body of work is built on love, versatility and resilience.
On our family farm in the small town of Putten, in the Netherlands, ‘Mixedness is my Mythology’ was born out of portraying my brothers during the pandemic lockdowns using the agricultural barns, orchards and land as backdrops. Deep within myself, the question lingered: We wear Dutch clogs and overalls, yet we have African curls, so where do we belong? The answer came through creating this body of work: we belong to ourselves.”
