Heap-O-Livin’ features a selection of images by Wyoming photographer and diarist Lora Webb Nichols (1883-1962). Nichols created and collected approximately 24,000 negatives and 65 years of diaries throughout her lifetime in the town of Encampment.
In addition to the industrial and economic aspects of this sparsely populated ranching and copper mining town, Lora’s images and diaries documented the lives of the girls and women within private households.
Despite the inherent isolation created by geography, the long brutal winters, and the patriarchal ideology that undervalued the role of women in Encampment in the late 19th and early 20th century, a robust female-led community emerged that provided a network of spiritual and emotional support. This was cultivated through the habitual visitations of immediate and extended family and friends into each other’s homes during their transition from children to wives and mothers. In Nichols’ sphere, these visitations often involved the act of picture-making.
Lora photographed their duties and mothers and homemakers but also made photographs that reveal the pleasure they experienced in simply being in each other’s company.

We are working with Rick van der Klooster on his first book: “Between the Mountain and the River”. He created a campaign to support the book, check out the link in bio for more information. 💫💫

This is his story:
“Throughout my childhood I spent the school holidays in the mountains with my mother, she often stood next to the schoolyard with a fully loaded car waiting so that we could leave immediately. It was only when she suddenly became terminally ill in 2013 that I realized how special the landscape had become for her and for me. During and after my mother’s illness, I regularly wandered through Google Earth about the places where we had often been together and imagined how she would continue to live there.
The Alps became a place where my mother could continue to live in her thoughts. The fear of going back and really losing her kept me from setting foot near my mother’s mountains for years. For years I visited my mother’s guesthouse in the Alps in my dreams. She often sat on a porch with solid wooden beams and planters filled with red flowers. We talked about what it’s like to be dead, that the world moves on and how to deal with that.
In July 2018, five years after my mother’s death, I returned to the mountains of my youth. Fearful, but determined, I entered the high forest on the border mountain and heard the river on the other side of the mountain calling me.”

Now available: ‘I on the Road – Weather Camera Self-portraits’ by @tatug ✨✨
‘I on the Road’ is the first book by Finnish artist Tatu Gustafsson and consists of 200 self-portraits taken with a weather cameras. When Gustafsson started making self-portraits in 2012, he was looking for an alternative way of making photographs and wanted to question the issues of authorship associated with traditional photography. Discovering that Finland’s traffic and weather cameras snap photos every 12 minutes, storing them online for 24 hours, Gustafsson made a journey across the country, positioning himself in front of these outdoor cameras. The results are haunting images that capture the essence of solitude. Utilizing over 700 roadside cameras scattered throughout Finland, Gustafsson embraced the lack of control inherent in this process. Spending a week each month living in his car, he traversed the nation, becoming a ghostly presence amidst the tranquil landscapes captured by the automated cameras.

Now available: ‘I am the only woman there by Bertien van Manen 📘🖤
Bertien van Manen (1935-2024) photographed in the 1970’s female labor migrants, and the wives of labor migrants, who came to the Netherlands in the context of family reunification. She portrayed Turkish, Moroccan, Tunisian, Spanish, Yugoslavian, Portugese, Greek and Italian women. At home, work, parties and leisure activities, often struggling to survive in a foreign culture. These photographs resulted in her first book ‘Vrouwen te Gast’, published in 1979. In 2024 Bertien revisited her own photographs and texts to make a new, more contemporary, edit of her first work. For ‘I am the only woman there’ she updated the book with new discovered photographs from her archive and new texts, by herself and Kim Knoppers.

‘On the ground among the animals’ (2015-2024) is a research project that takes the Natura 2000 network as a reference for researching the place that human beings occupy within nature. This network is a series of ecological corridors promoted by the European Union, created to preserve fauna, flora and biodiversity. It is a transnational communication system that goes beyond the border policies of each state, and puts ecological logic first. Bridges are some of the most important infrastructures in the network, since they make it easier for animals to overcome architectural barriers such as motorways and roads. At the same time, multiple fences and security cameras monitor and follow their movements, casting doubt on their apparent freedom of movement. The series includes landscape views of natural spaces and photographs of viaducts and other constructions, as well as snapshots of animals captured by surveillance cameras installed by researchers.

The book is a revised and English edition of Bertien’s first book ‘Vrouwen te Gast’ (1979). “I was fed up with the hectic life of working for magazines, and I wanted more time to produce less superficial photographs. When I read the preface to the book ‘A Seventh Man: Migrant Workers in Europe’ (1975) by John Berger and Jean Mohr, I knew what I had to do. Berger points out that they had only documented the experiences of male migrant workers. He thought another book should be made for the women. That’s my subject matter, I thought.
No one had devoted any attention to the first generation of women migrant workers in Europe, from Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Yugoslavia and Greece. I decided to focus on the Netherlands. No one had looked into their position on the job market or dependence on their husbands. In fact, no one even knew of their existence because you barely saw them. They stayed in their rooms and were not allowed to do much. I shined some light on them with that book and that is something I am really proud of. I photographed them in their homes, at work and during celebrations. All in black and white. And I took photos at a demonstration by Turkish women migrant workers at a poultry plant in Almelo. Most of the women in the portraits I took were originally from the countryside, had followed their husbands here and suddenly sat holed up in a small back apartment three floors up. I photographed some single women, too, who had come to the Netherlands on their own to find work.” — Bertien van Manen in an interview with Kim Knoppers, May 2024. The book will be launched at Unseen. In September a selection of works will be on display at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam, as part of the exhibition “If only you knew” by Çiğdem Yüksel
