Volkskrant Best Books 2013
Volkskrant made an inventory of all Dutch Photobooks, produced in 2013. Five books are selected as favorites, with ‘Floating Population’ by Nadine Stijns, and ‘Border Theories’ by Elian Somers among this small selection.
Both are still for sale, and would make a great Christmas gift.

‘Fake Flowers in Full Colour’, ‘Cette Montagne C’est Moi’, and ‘The Mother Road’ in China
3 projects by Fw: will are on display in Nanjing (China) within the context of the exhibition ‘Graphic Happiness’. The exhibition is curated by Fin Zhao and Imke Ruigrok, the exhibition of Graphic Happiness will travel throughout China for the duration of 14 months. It will be launched on the 24th of November 2012 at the Museum of the University of the Arts in Nanjing, as part of the school’s 100th anniversary celebrations. From then on the exhibition will travel to the following cities: Guangzhou, winter 2013 Shanghai, summer 2013 Beijing, autumn 2013 Chengdu, late autumn 2013.

Nomination Rotterdam Designprize
The Rotterdam Designprize is one of the most important design prizes in The Netherlands. For the 2011 edition, the eleventh edition, five scouts selected each three different designers or projects. With this new approach the partners hope to stimulate the discussion about the meaning of design.
For this edition the photographic related designwork of Hans Gremmen is nomintated. Jury: “…The magazine Fw:, which explores the implications of the ways photography is represented, merits special mention. Thus, in Fw: 9: ‘Off the Wall’, he documents several photo exhibitions with shots of the works on display in which the backgrounds are left out. The works are shown in perspective, distorted on the white background of the page. Here, the designer has found a form that strikes a balance between exhibition and publication and at the same time questions both.”

Monkey Playhouse is an ongoing project by Ellen Mandemaker and consists of many stories and chapters that all take place in a doll’s house: The Monkey Playhouse. The work is already shown in celebrated exhibitions in the past, but this is the first time that parts of this project are published. For this publication three of stories are combined: ‘The Girl’, ‘Naughty Monkeys’ and ‘Dancing Couple’. ‘The publication will be presented in Amsterdam at Ton de Boer, Conradstraat 70A, 1018 NK Amsterdam.

Shortlist for ‘A Falling Horizon’
‘A Falling Horizon’ by Heidi de Gier has made it to the shortlist of the Best Contemporary Book Award 2011; an anual award that is part of the festival ‘Recontres d’Arles’. Winner of the prestigious competition this year is ‘A Living Man Declared Dead’ by Taryn Simon. The Historical Book Award went to Works by Lewis Baltz

Bezuinigen op cultuur zonder alle feiten? Nooit!
De bezuinigingen op Kunst en Cultuur zijn tot op de euro berekend. De maatschappelijke en economische consequenties zijn echter niet becijferd.
De schadelast zal waarschijnlijk veel hoger uitvallen dan de totale bezuinigingen. Dat is onaanvaardbaar! Teken daarom de petitie hier.

Zondag en maandag: zorg dat je erbij bent!
Gisterenavond in het Stedelijk was het café volgestroomd voor een ‘town hall meeting’ over de cultuurbezuinigingen, een soort intern beraad: wat gaan we doen de komende dagen, wat staat centraal en hoe organiseren we ons? Drie dingen kwamen daarbij steeds aan bod:
– Solidariteit met elkaar, dit is niet de tijd om onderlinge verschillen te benadrukken.
– Doen – niet slechts ideeën opperen, excuses verzinnen, maar wees zichtbaar en laat je horen. Mobiliseer iedereen die je kent.
– De bezuinigingen zijn geen beleid maar een ideologisch offensief. Argumenten hebben geen effect.

Zondag en maandag vinden de belangrijkste protesten plaats. Voor degenen die niet de hele tijd aanwezig kunnen zijn en noodgedwongen een keuze moeten maken zijn dit de belangrijkste tijdstippen:
– Zondag / 14 uur / Boijmans in Rotterdam, dan zijn ook prominente politici aanwezig;
– Maandag / 13 uur / Malieveld in Den Haag, dan lopen we naar het Binnenhof en gaat het om strength in numbers.

Nogmaals, laat op die momenten alles uit handen vallen, dit is belangrijker. Zet twijfels en scepsis overboord. Het gaat over alles wat ons dierbaar is.

Exhibition and Library: Foxtrot Whiskey
We were invited by Bohm/Kobayashi to create in the context of Ant!foto an exhibition based on the books we have published so far. At the Künstlerverein Malkasten we will show work from Jaap Scheeren & Hans Gremmen (Fake Flowers in Full Colour), Jan Adriaans (Garage), Dieuwertje Komen (Commonness), Heidi de Gier (a Falling Horizon), Geraldine Jeanjean (Aumont) and Ringel Goslinga (Family Tree). Fake Flowers in Full Colour finalist Dutch Design Awards
The Fw:-publication ‘Fake Flowers in Full Colour’ by Jaap Scheeren and Hans Gremmen is finalist for the Dutch Design Awards 2010. The book is nominated in the category ‘Best Graphic Design’. The winner will be announced on Saturday 23rd of October in Eindhoven at the start of the Dutch Design Week. The first edition of ‘Fake Flowers in Full Colour’ is nearly out of print. A second edition is ‘under construction’.

Unter dem Motto 2010
Fw: will take again part in the energetic ‘Unter dem Motto’ art book fair in Berlin. The annual fair hosted by Motto Berlin and Chert Gallery will take place at their locations in Berlin Kreuzberg, from the 3rd to the 5th of September 2010. More than 70 publishers from about 17 countries will present their works and show an eclectic overview of contemporary art publishing, ranging from home-printed zines to publications by established institutions. Unter dem Motto provides a professional look into the newest developments of the international artistic publishing scene.

Honorable mention Fw: Dutch Doc Award 2010
According to the jury of the Dutch Doc Award 2010: ” … Finally the jury wants to include an honorable mention in this prize for Fw:. Although this collaborative initiative didn’t fit in any of the categories, the jury would like to praise the experimental and thorough approach of this group of photographers and designers.” The Dutch Doc Award is a new prize for Documentary Photography. It is an initiative of Dutch Doc (from the Fonds BKVB) and Fotodok.

First Virtual Exhibition of Shows @ Art Amsterdam, the live stream

‘Concrete Dreams’ by Elian Somers and Dieuwertje Komen
For this exhibition Fw: asked two photographers which work within the (urban) landscape. They will show how they direct this landscape in their work on a subjective level. This level is still connected to reality, but goes further by showing the ‘twilight zone’ of that. More information.
During the opening, we will present the publication ‘Commonness’ by Dieuwertje Komen. This publication contains an essay from the architect Martino Tattara, and will be published by Fw:

Fw: is invited to participate in the venue ‘Unter dem Motto’. 40 publishers, selected by Nieves, Rollo Press and Motto, present and sell their books at this event. ‘Unter dem Motto’ is hosted by Motto bookstore and Chert gallery: Motto/Chert, Berlin. Berlin is this weekend the host of three events that are related to ‘Independent Publishing’. ‘Cast (part 2)’ by Raymond Taudin Chabot at De Balie, Amsterdam
The publication ‘Cast (part 4)’, published by Roma Publications in 2007, was the reason for Fw: to invite Raymond Taudin Chabot to make an exhibition at De Balie. As an answer to this question Raymond made the exhibition ‘Cast (part 2)’ which will be shown until september 2009. The photographic serie of empty waitingrooms ‘Silent Queue’ is the binding factor in the exhibition. in the -espacially made for this exhibition- publication ‘Cast (part 2)’ Raymond is investigating his own work by deconstructing his photographs and putting them back together on the pages, and extend them with new work that is also shown in this exhibition. By putting this publication up front in the presentation -it will be distributed during the exhibitions in the cafe of De Balie- the circle is completed. The exhibition of Raymond Taudin Chabot is the second part of a duo-presentation. In May and June the work of Paulien Oltheten was shown at De Balie. Caroline von Courten will write about the thematics of these to exhibitions, which will be included in a final publication.

Fw: 7 Pages, The Cuenca Edition
Publication made on the occasion of PhotoEspaña 2009. It can be seen as an addendum of ‘Fw:7 Pages’. It shows all the books and contains a transcript of a conversation between Fw: and Frits Gierstberg of the Nederlands Fotomuseum about the selection of Pages in Cuenca.

What is the position of the contemporary documenatry photographer? The documentary photography was for a long time given an identity by its engagement and involvement in social stories. Nowadays our contact with the world is scattered over several media. Documentary photographers are reflecting there position as image-makers and define there position within the field of documentary photography. They explain which strategies they use to tell their stories.

Exhibition by Paulien Oltheten at De Balie, Amsterdam
The public domain and the street are the territory of Paulien Oltheten. The behaviour of people within these public spaces are her subject. She documentates, makes observations and discoveries. This is the footage that she will organize and make complete with thoughts and drawings written down. She doesn’t focus on large happenings, but her gaze is more searching for small gestures, and habits; a movement of a hand, a conversation of 2 people. recently she took a new step in her work. In Japan she was started to direct and interfere with the people and surroundings she was documentating. The exhibition will be shown until June 9. Following, Raymond Taudin Chabot will exhibit as part of this duo presentation. Caroline von Courten will compile an independent publication following the common theme of the exhibitions.

Art Books in Light / W139, Amsterdam
From this day Fw: will take a new turn in clustering, publishing, distributing and initiating books. This will be done by our webshop and some specialized bookshops. Because of this new perspective Fw: was askes to participate in a venue ‘Art Books In Light’ , which is organised by W139 and publisher Valiz . The event will take place at W139 in Amsterdam. Valiz and W139 in Amsterdam are organising an event focusing on art books by smaller, independent publishers in the Netherlands and Belgium. The bookshop offers 15 independent art book publishers a platform for a joint presentation. A programme of readings, workshops and salons on the theme of the art book will be held from Friday 15 May to Sunday 24 May. To have a lush life is our aim. After long days of virtue, we like to indulge ourselves in excessive luxery.’ Babette Kleijn and Jan Adriaans play with this human desire. In staged images with precisely chosen compositions, they show new possibilities for this ‘lush life’. In a closer look you find poverty, clumsiness and misfortune being part of the scenes. The project in Budapest is the result of the co-operation of Lumen Photoart Foundation and Fw:.

‘My Old Europe’, exhibition by Babette Kleijn
Within the project ‘Faraway So Close’, Fw: brings together the work of two photographers that each create their own world as a kind of new reality, by using elements from reality. In this way important issues of contemporary life are questioned, as well as conventional thoughts about photography in general. In ‘My Old Europe’, Babette Kleijn (1978) is inspired by the idea of ancient Europe. The history, the raw origin of our planet and the close attachment that humans used to have to nature, form the key points of her work. Among others, Kleijn visited ‘Grube Clara’ in the black forests in Germany, the carbonized woods in Lesbos and ‘Snowdonia’ in Wales. The collection of these places and monuments, depicted by Kleijn, form a kind of decor for a new story. With the negligent of time and place, she accentuates the compilation of images and their colours, forms and structures. The exhibition will be shown until April 5. Following, Babette Kleijn will exhibit ‘My Old Europe’ as part of this duo presentation. Taco Hidde Bakker will compile an independent publication following the common theme of the exhibitions.

Book presentation ‘Plateau’ by Nickel van Duijvenboden
‘Plateau’ is a novel about two scientists who, during the Cold War, are staying on an Arctic ice pack. This is Nickels second book, following the collection of essays ‘De grote afwezige’ (2003).

‘Aumont’, exhibition by Geraldine JeanJean
Although her parents are both French, Geraldine JeanJean was born and raised in The Netherlands. Her grandmother used to live in one of less populated areas in France, in the village Aumont. During a four-year period, JeanJean photographed landscapes and portrayed inhabitants of the village, depicting silence and abandonment.

India Express
Between 12 and 30 November, the Amsterdam India Festival (AIF) takes place. Within this festival, De Balie will curate a versatile program: India Express. On invitation by De Balie, Fw: arranges an exhibition, showing works by Cuny Janssen, Martine Stig and Vanessa van Dam, Joyce Vlaming and WassinkLundgren. In her first book ‘India’ (2002), Cuny Janssen shows portraits of Indian children. According to her, children represent the pure origin of each human being. In ‘Any resemblance to Existing Persons is Purely Coincidental (Stories of Mr. Wood)’ (2006) Martine Stig and Vanessa van Dam are searching for Mr. Wood. They show us reality as a construction and through that, they question the functional reality and narrative structure of motion pictures. In ‘India Now’, Joyce Vlaming questions the position of young, highly educated Indians of her own generation, in the rapidly changing city landscape of India, that is under strong influence of new economic development. Only after looking closer and after details of separate pictures are connected, the series that WassinkLundgren made of guards in Bolleywood film sets (2007) show us what exactly they are guarding.

One weekend show IV: Mieke Woestenburg + Aard Bakker
Fw: organizes a series of four presentations in ‘Het Wilde Weten’ in Rotterdam. For the fourth presentation, Fw: invites Mieke Woestenburg. She, in turn, invites Aard Bakker. During three days, Woestenburg and Bakker will use the space of ‘Het Wilde Weten’ as a studio, to read and interpret spatial information according to aerial photographs made by Woestenburg. The material produced by these analyses will from a base for a publication, ‘Raw Material’, which they will make as a result of this exhibition period. Taco Hidde Bakker writes a text about the presentation.

One weekend show III: Gwenneth Boelens + Nickel van Duijvenboden
Fw: organizes a series of four presentations in ‘Het Wilde Weten’ in Rotterdam. For the third presentation, Fw: invites Gwenneth Boelens and Nickel van Duijvenboden. Since 2006, they have been collaborating under the name Il faut ’. For this occasion, their collaboration results in a performance. ‘Indirect Speech’, performed by Monica Blok, is based on two separate works which they have adjusted especially for this occasion: the installation ‘A Whole Fragment (Gwenneth Boelens, 2007) and the novel ‘Plateau’ (Nickel van Duijvenboden, 2009). Both indicate the relation between logic and subjectivity, observation and the realm of thought. Raymond Frenken writes a text about the presentation.

One weekend Show II: Jaap Scheeren + Hans Gremmen
Fw: organizes a series of four presentations at Het Wilde Weten in Rotterdam. For the second presentation Fw: invites Jaap Scheeren who invites Hans Gremmen . During a period of three days Scheeren and Gremmen use the project space at Het Wilde Weten as a workspace to create the still-life ‘Fake Flowers in Full Colour’. During the presentation CMYK-soft-drinks in all possible colours are offered to the visitors. The drinks are produced by the installation ‘Full Colour’ by Helmut Smits. Ilse van Rijn writes an essay about the presentation and collaboration.

In recent years a divers range of international exhibitions and books are devoted to the medium of the Photography Book. The main focus in these exhibitions and publications was to get a grip on the history of the medium. The exhibition Pages aims to show how contemporary Dutch photographers use the medium of the photo book. The publications that are shown are as rich and experimental as the original work of the photographers. Personal photographic essays, documentaries, conceptual research project are shown besides publications that challenge the reader to interact. The photographic quality and the professional attitude are the binding factors in the selection. There are as many ways to tell a story as there are storytellers. But how does the photographer deal with a narrative as a starting point and how does this relate to the final presentation of the work? This question forms the basis for the exhibition curated by Fw:. The exhibition shows projects by photographers where notions as documentation, narration, abstraction and presentation play an important role. Is the subject seen purely objective? Can one stage events afterwards to tell what that he/she wants to tell? How and where to put the emphasis? Does the actual narrative evolve while working on it, or is it prescribed? And: does one present the story exclusively on the wall, in a book, or as supplement to a newspaper?

Artist Talk 04 at Fotofestival Naarden
During this artist talk (unlike earlier artist talks) the work of one photographer will is discussed: Awoiska van der Molen (1972). Her solo exhibition Ground is on show at Fotofestival Naarden. Her work can also be seen until the June 20th at Foam 3_3h. Awoiska van der Molen photographs places in the urban environment where time does not seem to exist. The silence and soberness that characterize her work are amplified by working at night and using black and white negative film. In conversation with Kim Knoppers she will speak about her images, her method of working and inspirations. Also her commission for Fotofestival Naarden is being discussed.

Fw: organizes a series of two-monthly artist talks by and for young photographers at De Wittenplaats, Amsterdam. During the third artist talk, graphic designer Hans Gremmen and photographer Bob van der Vlist discuss their work and the importance of a collaboration between photographer and graphic designer. Different modes of collaboration are discussed through the project Stadswijk Rotterdam. In this project, Hans and Bob were searching for new forms of presenting a publication through a website. The website generates a publication as PDF by areas of interest chosen by the viewer. Each new publication consists of another configuration of images. The artist talk is moderated by Kim Knoppers.

During the second artist talk, Dieuwertje Komen and Jan Adriaans discuss their work, moderated by Kim Knoppers. Dieuwertje Komen and Jan Adriaans have discussed their work on a regular basis during the past three years. Both their work is on show now in the exhibition GebouwGezichten at the NAi. , Rotterdam. This evening they present the work they both made for this exhibition. Furthermore they will discuss differences and similarities in their methods of working.

Fw: organizes a series of two-monthly artist talks by and for young photographers at De Wittenplaats, Amsterdam. During the first artist talk, Yvonne Lacet and Karin Krijgsman discuss their work, moderated by Kim Knoppers. “The ultimate image. Every photographer is searching for the ultimate image. The search towards this image is different for every person. Karin Krijgsman and Yvonne Lacet differ like day and night. Still, there is a starting point in their work to discuss the work together. Both Karin and Yvonne are interested in the artificiality of nature at the moment. They are fascinated by the construction of nature by humans.” (Kim Knoppers)

“Why would eight photographers independently go to China? It is supposed to be happening there. Taking pictures is a ‘happiness drug’. Maybe this counts extra for doing so in a city as Shanghai, a place where much is happening, as it seems. There is a daily rush in the streets and a high speed of acting. Constructing sites emerge everywhere around you, same as the dust. You may realize that few new things happen at the same time. All that surrounds you, you have seen before somewhere else. Only not in this haste, speed and multiplicity. Shanghai is a city where reality makes you dizzy; this dizziness can be like a dream. As a contemporary citizen of Shanghai you constantly switch between luxurious living, only if you are a foreigner, and the hard reality of the day, between all you know and all that is strange. The feeling rises that all that looks familiar has lost its meaning in this place. In fact it is in front of you and real but as an empty shell, it is only a point of recognition.” (KK)

S75 is the type of mobile phone, sponsored for this project by the company Siemens/BenQ. This telephone (with a camera) was in fact the only camera the participating photographers could use for the exhibition and publication. Founding of Fw:
Fw: is founded with the intention to support and inspire a group of ten young photographers, after they have graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts. By organizing monthly gatherings, the collective offers discussion and reflection on the working process of the photographers.
