Nicola Nunziata investigates the work of Italian photographer Ando Gilardi, by focusing on the places and workspaces created and inhabited by Ando. This book is an index of the photographic materials, personal artifacts and archival materials, and is presented as an unbound book, in a folder, as a work in progress.

Michael Ashkin — There will be two of you

‘There will be two of you’ reorganizes and adds to the original 133 panoramic images of the New Jersey Meadowlands commissioned by Okwui Enwezor for Documenta 11 in 2002. The black and white photographs were installed at Documenta as a wall grid, but are here restored to the sequence in which they were taken during a year of meandering walks. The NJ Meadowlands have long been at the core of Ashkin’s visual imagination. In the accompanying text, ‘There will be two of you’, an enigmatic incident at the landscape’s symbolic center promises a redemptive allegory it cannot deliver.

Gerco de Ruijter — Footprint

Together with writer and filmmaker Peter Delpeut, Gerco de Ruijter investigates a phenomenon which they encountered on Google Earth, looking at airports. In the winter, planes are stripped of ice. On the concrete the stencil of an aeroplane remains, just long enough for the satellite to photograph it. De Ruijter and Delpeut wondered whether these giant drawings of aeroplanes really belong on a map. Or is Google Earth not a map, but a unique image of the world? It led to a quest for the mysterious aspects of ‘maps’ and Google Earth in particular, with Oklahoma City airport as the centre of attention.

RePose is a collection of close to 60 self-portraits made by the artist Tarrah Krajnak over the course of long-duration, studio-based live performances that incorporate an onsite darkroom, lighting studio, and an installation of xeroxed images of hundreds of examples of ‘women’s poses’. Krajnak sources these ‘women’s poses’ from her own personal collection and from site specific archival research, they come from fashion, vintage pornographic magazines, artist monographs, art history books, museum catalogs, and anthropological studies that span centuries and continents. @tarrahkrajnak_studio

Ed Panar — Winter Nights, Walking

In the winter months, our planet slowly drifts towards the furthest reaches of its orbital path around the Sun who exerts just enough gravitational force to coax Earth back around one more time, lest we’re launched outward into the Solar System, starless and adrift. A steady shower of millions of individually designed crystal sculpted snowflakes create a soft temporary encasement enclosing trees, poles, wires, streets, hills and houses inside pillowed layers below. During some of those nights there is a heightened sense of stillness and quiet all around, as if the world itself was placed on mute. The title ‘Winter Nights, Walking’ is a reference to a celebrated photography project by the American artist Robert Adams entitled ‘Summer Nights, Walking’, which was made in the the city of Denver in the American West. While the project could be seen as a nod to Adams, Panar’s intention for ‘Winter Nights, Walking’ is to make a Pittsburgh-specific project that highlights the unique qualities of the recent winter seasons in this region, with an eye towards the changing climate and the recent dark winters of the Covid-19 pandemic. Through the motif of wandering the city alone at night, Panar invites viewers to walk with me and consider the familiar space of the city in its uncanny delight. @edpanar

RePose is a collection of close to 60 self-portraits made by the artist Tarrah Krajnak over the course of long-duration, studio-based live performances that incorporate an onsite darkroom, lighting studio, and an installation of xeroxed images of hundreds of examples of “women’s poses”. Krajnak sources these “women’s poses” from her own personal collection and from site specific archival research– they come from fashion, vintage pornographic magazines, artist monographs, art history books, museum catalogs, and anthropological studies that span centuries and continents. Over the course of these live performances, Krajnak chooses poses from among these images to “re-pose” using her own body, slowly producing a series of new self-portraits in real time. At the end of each day, she develops and prints the exposed film in the on-site darkroom, and then hangs the resulting silver gelatin prints next to its source image. For the first time, these self-portraits are printed here in book form, separated from their original source material; they now collectively build a new typology of “women’s poses”.

In the closing essay titled “Picture a Woman”, the American photographer Justine Kurland writes, “turning the pages of RePose, those images mapping on top of each other like a flip-book, animating Tarrah’s marionette-like movements and stuttering to life. We might think of the Greek root of the word “archive” itself, meaning “beginning, origin, first place,”and imagine Tarrah restaging her own birth, willing herself into being and rising out of the archive, hobbled together from the very stuff of her own exclusion like the undead of a Frankenstein’s monster. Tarrah dances over the archive, her form a singular, snaking aggregate containing a chorus of women’s poses.”
